The differences between stainless steel 201 and 304:
1. The most commonly used stainless steel plates are divided into two types: 201 and 304. They differ in composition. 304 is of better quality but more expensive, while 201 is of lower quality. 304 is an imported stainless steel plate, and 201 is a domestic one.
2. 201 is composed of 17Cr-4.5Ni-6Mn-N, a type of nickel-saving steel and a substitute for 301 steel. It becomes magnetic after cold working and is used in railway vehicles. 304 is composed of 18Cr-9Ni and is the most widely used stainless steel and heat-resistant steel. It is used in food production equipment, general chemical equipment, nuclear energy, etc.
3. 201 has a higher manganese content, with a bright surface that has a dark luster. The higher manganese content makes it prone to rust. 304 has a higher chromium content, with a matte surface and does not rust. When placed together, the difference is obvious. The most important difference is the corrosion resistance. 201 has poor corrosion resistance, so its price is much lower. Also, because 201 has a lower nickel content, its price is lower than that of 304, and thus its corrosion resistance is not as good as that of 304.
4. The difference between 201 and 304 lies in the nickel content. Moreover, the price of 304 is relatively high, usually close to 50,000 yuan per ton. However, 304 can ensure that it will not rust during use. (It can be tested with chemicals.)
5. Stainless steel is not prone to rust because a chromium-rich oxide layer forms on the surface to protect the steel. 201 is a high-manganese stainless steel with higher hardness, higher carbon content, and lower nickel content than 304.
6. The composition of 201 and 304 stainless steel can be distinguished mainly by the content of carbon, manganese, nickel, and chromium. Steel grade Carbon (C) Silicon (Si) Manganese (Mn) Phosphorus (P) Sulfur (S) Chromium (Cr) Nickel (Ni) Molybdenum (Mo) Copper (Cu) AISI (304) ≤0.08 ≤1.00 ≤2.00 ≤0.045 ≤0.03 18-20 8-10 AISI (201) ≤0.15 ≤1.00 5.5-7.5 ≤0.05 ≤0.03 16-18 3.5-5.5
7. In terms of fatigue resistance, 201 has a higher hardness but lower toughness than 304. Therefore, 304 has better fatigue resistance.
